Released in 1972 as the 2nd installment of the album series "The Music of Africa," curated by the non-profit organization The International Library of African Music based in Washington, USA. This collection features field recordings of African folk music and was recorded on-site by the organization's founder, British ethnomusicologist Hugh Tracy, who had been conducting field recordings since the 1920s. In this work, performances of the mbira (thumb piano) by a total of 14 tribes residing in Uganda, Tanzania, Congo, Rhodesia, Zambia, Mozambique, South Africa, and Barotseland are recorded. It is fascinating how they are classified according to pentatonic, hexatonic, and heptatonic scales, allowing listeners to enjoy variations of the thumb piano found across a wide region of the African continent. The recording quality is also outstanding. Highly recommended in every aspect.
